The Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) is an advanced-level battery of English language proficiency tests for adult nonnative speakers of English who need to use English for academic purposes at the college and university level. It is mainly for students applying to universities in the United States of America USA, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom UK.
Format of the MELAB
The MELAB is designed to measure your proficiency in the four basic language skill areas: writing, listening, reading, and speaking.
- Written Section: Time allowed is 30 minutes. Student has to write an essay on any one of the two topics given to him/her.
- Listening Section: Time allowed is 40 minutes. This section is subdivided in to 3 parts. Part 1 is that a short recorded question or statement is accompanied by three printed responses. Part 2 is that a recorded conversation is accompanied by three printed statements. Part 3 is that four recorded interviews, such as those that might be heard on the radio, are each followed by recorded comprehension questions.

- Grammar-Cloze-Vocabulary-Reading Section: Time allowed is 80 minutes. As the name indicate, this Section is divided in to 4 sub parts. In Grammar part, an incomplete sentence is followed by a choice of four words or phrases to complete it. In Cloze part, two passages with deletions are followed by choices of words and phrases to complete the text. In Vocabulary part, an incomplete sentence is followed by a choice of four words or phrases to complete it. And last, in Reading part, four reading passages are followed by comprehension questions.
- Speaking: Time allowed is 15 minutes. Applicant engages in a conversation with the examiner.
